A young girl’s life changed dramatically after she faced rejection from both her biological mother and twenty potential adoptive families. Alba’s story demonstrates the profound impact of love, resilience, and determination in adoption.
The remarkable journey began in Italy, where single, homosexual men rarely receive approval to adopt children through social services. Luca Trapanese, a 41-year-old man, would later defy these barriers, proving that fatherhood transcends stereotypes and societal expectations.
Alba was born with Down syndrome, a condition that often discourages families from adoption due to the additional care and support required. Despite this, Luca immediately expressed his willingness to embrace her fully.
“I was told I would only be considered for a child with a severe illness, disability, or behavioral challenge,” Luca explained. “I was absolutely ready to welcome such a child and give her a loving home.”
In 2017, Alba was just thirteen days old when Luca officially adopted her. Prior to that, she had been rejected by twenty families, each hesitant to care for a child with special needs.
Luca had long dreamed of becoming a father. His desire to care for vulnerable people began at age fourteen, when he lost his best friend to cancer. This tragic experience sparked a lifelong passion for helping others.
He volunteered at multiple care centers connected to the Catholic Church, often assisting critically ill or disabled individuals. These early experiences provided Luca with the skills, patience, and empathy necessary to raise a child with complex needs.
When he first held Alba, Luca described the moment as transformative. “I had always been nervous around newborns. But the instant I held her, I felt she was my daughter. Joy and love overwhelmed me completely,” he recalled.
From the beginning, Luca committed himself fully to Alba’s care. He focused on nurturing her development, ensuring she received medical attention, social support, and early learning opportunities, all while creating a joyful and secure home environment.
Alba quickly adapted to her new surroundings. Described as determined, playful, and occasionally stubborn, she thrives in her father’s care. Her early childhood has been enriched with laughter, dance, playtime, and meaningful social interaction.
Luca’s dedication to Alba also reflects broader societal implications. His successful adoption challenges conventional notions of family in Italy, particularly regarding single and LGBTQ+ parents navigating a historically restrictive adoption system.
